The internet feels wireless, but it's held together by fragile undersea cables. Explore the vulnerabilities of this system and what it means for the global economy and your startup's resilience.
If you’re building a startup today, your entire world exists on the internet. Your code is on GitHub, your data is in AWS, your comms are on Slack, and your customers are reached via APIs and web apps. It feels instantaneous, wireless, and ephemeral. It feels like a cloud.
This is an illusion.
The reality is that over 95% of international data, the lifeblood of the global economy, travels through a physical network of cables lying on the deep ocean floor. This system is the most critical piece of infrastructure ever built by humans, and it’s also one of the most fragile.
As founders and builders, we operate on top of this system, often with a dangerous level of abstraction. We don't think about the plumbing. But if you're betting your company on the stability of the internet, it's worth understanding what that stability actually rests on.
The Anatomy of a Submarine Cable
These aren’t thick, armored pipes. A trans-oceanic cable is a bundle of hair-thin glass fibers surrounded by steel armor, copper shielding, and layers of protective plastic. It’s about as thick as a garden hose.
These cables are engineering marvels, designed to withstand immense pressure, saltwater corrosion, and even the occasional shark bite (which, contrary to myth, is a very rare but real issue). They are laid by specialized ships that slowly traverse the ocean floor, carefully placing this fragile thread along predetermined paths to avoid undersea cliffs and seismic zones.
The data transfer capabilities are staggering. A single cable system like the new MAREA cable (backed by Microsoft, Meta, and Telxius) can carry up to 224 terabits of data per second. That’s millions of times faster than your home connection, capable of streaming every movie in existence simultaneously many times over.
The Fragility of the System
This system works so well that we forget it exists. But it is vulnerable in ways that should keep every CTO and CEO awake at night.
1. The Shallow Water Problem: While deep-sea cables are relatively safe from human interference, the real vulnerability exists where the cables come ashore. In shallow waters, they are exposed to fishing trawlers, ship anchors, and natural disasters. Over 70% of cable faults are caused by ship anchors and fishing equipment. A single dragged anchor in a congested port can sever a cable that carries terabits of data.
2. Geopolitical Chokepoints: The internet’s map is not evenly distributed. Cables are funneled through narrow geographic chokepoints. The Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines, the Suez Canal, and the English Channel are all critical junctures where multiple cables converge. A conflict, accident, or targeted attack in one of these areas could disrupt a disproportionate amount of global traffic.
3. Targeted Attacks: This is no longer theoretical. In 2021, the Norwegian government reported unusual damage to subsea internet cables connecting to a large radar station that monitors its oil and gas infrastructure.
In 2022, a mysterious attack severed the cables connecting the volcanic island of Tonga, cutting it off from the world for weeks. State-level actors are acutely aware of the asymmetric impact of targeting this infrastructure.
The Economic Impact of a Snapped String
What happens when one of these cables is cut? The internet doesn't "go down." It reroutes.
The network is designed with redundancy. Traffic meant for a severed cable in the Mediterranean will attempt to find a path through other cables, perhaps under the Atlantic or through the Red Sea. This is where the second-order effects kick in:
· Latency Spikes: The rerouted path is almost always longer. For a financial trading firm in London communicating with Tokyo, a few extra milliseconds of latency means millions lost. For a user on a Zoom call, it means frozen screens and dropped audio.
· Congestion: The remaining cables become congested, acting like traffic piling onto side roads after a freeway closure. Performance degrades globally for certain routes.
· Cascading Failures: In a scenario where multiple cables are compromised, whether by a natural disaster in a chokepoint or a coordinated attack, the redundancy fails. The system becomes overwhelmed. The internet, for entire regions, would effectively cease to function in any meaningful way.
The immediate economic impact would be catastrophic. Global finance would freeze. Supply chains, which rely on real-time tracking and logistics, would break. Remote work would become impossible. The very premise of your cloud-native startup, instant, reliable global access would vanish.
What This Means for Founders
You can't fix the subsea cable problem. But as a founder, your job is to understand your stack's vulnerabilities, from the UI down to the metal. This is just another, deeper layer of that stack.
1. Architect for Redundancy, Not Just Uptime: Don't just think about AWS Availability Zones. Think about network paths. If your service is critical and latency-sensitive, where are your users? Where are your servers? Could your service survive if the primary transatlantic path went down? Using CDNs and geographically distributed backends isn't just for performance; it's for resilience.
2. Understand Your Dependencies: You rely on APIs, payment processors, and communication platforms. They all rely on this physical layer. Map your critical dependencies and have a plan for when they are degraded, not just when they are "down." What does your service look like in high-latency mode?
3. The Physical World Matters: The biggest lesson for internet builders is that the digital world is inextricably tied to the physical one. The idea of a purely "digital" company is a fallacy. You are built on top of a physical system of cables, data centers, and power grids. Acknowledging this is the first step toward building something truly robust.
The quiet work of the cable-laying ships is what makes the loud, fast, and disruptive work of startups possible. It’s a system that deserves our awe, our respect, and our sober understanding of its fragility. The future will be built by those who don’t just look up at the cloud, but who also remember the thin threads at the bottom of the sea that hold it all together.
